Expanding your family

Considering a four-legged addition to your family is a big decision and there are many options available.

Pet shops can no longer sell kittens and puppies, this has seen an increase in the use of online platforms to sell animals. Unfortunately there are no regulations and in our experience there is often pressure to make a quick decision and quick purchase. We have seen numerous cases where kittens and puppies purchased online have been in extremely poor health. Please take care when buying online, ask questions of the seller and if it doesn’t feel right, don’t feel pressured.

If you want a pure-bred puppy or kitten, then please find a breeder who is highly regarded. You can enquire through the association for that breed - for example the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria or The Burmese Cat Society. Go with recommendations. If the breeder asks lots of questions about you and your suitability to having one of their animals, then this breeder cares about where their babies go. Please also be aware that registered breeders will often provide papers outlining the lineage of the puppy or kitten.

Another option is a rescue dog or cat. There are many adoptive animals available of all breeds and crosses through Pet Rescue, Second Chance Animal Rescue, Save A Dog Scheme, RSPCA and there are many more.  Older animals do come with unknown histories, so please take your time deciding on one that is right for you and that suits your daily life. Rescuing an animal can be an extremely rewarding experience. For example, our clinic cat Sampson was a surrendered cat that needed a new home. He is loved by the clients and staff and has been a wonderful addition to our clinic.
