The importance of a check up

When our pets are not unwell then why should we visit the vet? It may seem like you are wasting the vet’s time and wasting your hard-earned money.

There are a number of things we can identify during a check-up that you will not be aware of at home. The simplest is if your animal has gained weight (because we spoil them way too much – ok well I spoil my animals with yummy treats. I am sure some of you do as well). Or if your animal has lost weight, this might be the first thing we see with diabetes, hyperthyroidism or sadly cancer.

We find lumps, especially in areas that you are unlikely to feel. We find heart murmurs that if treated early respond better to medication. We find teeth that are broken or rotten that are most likely causing discomfort. We find changes in eyes like hyperpigmentation where early administration of medication can slow or prevent the onset of blindness.

We can find, see and feel things that may change your animal’s future. So please know that a check-up once or twice a year (depending on the age of your animal) is so worthwhile.
